SCC and IBM launch new cloud platform for UK Government G-Cloud

LONDON, United Kingdom, 26 April 2012: SCC, Europe’s largest independent IT Group, announces today it has selected IBM hardware and software to help improve citizen services by creating a Secure Multi-Tenancy Cloud (SMTC) for CloudStore, part of the UK Government's G-Cloud programme. The UK-hosted cloud platform, created and managed by SCC, aims to deliver a diverse set of low cost business and technical services, ranging from back office processes to specialist government services, with high levels of security for public sector organisations.

Launching on 30 June 2012 the SMTC will offer scalable services and capabilities on a pay-as-you-go model. These will have been pre-accredited by UK Government from providers which currently include IBM and shortly a range of SME's. The cloud platform will be completing the Government's Technical Risk Assessment, it will be IL3 accredited delivering high levels of security and approved to hold restricted information. This can give public sector organisations the confidence and flexibility to deliver new solutions quickly and efficiently, without undertaking a lengthy procurement process or investing in new infrastructure.

For the cloud platform SCC selected IBM blade server hardware designed to be highly flexible and resilient, while keeping power consumption to a minimum. SCC also selected a range of Tivoli software and Storwize V7000 storage technology solutions, for their ability to scale and achieve high levels of security and cost effectiveness. Working together, SCC and IBM will also tailor a range of Software as a Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solutions designed purely for public sector organisations.

Together SCC and IBM will continue developing and expanding the SMTC whilst supporting additional services from SME's to ensure a full range of providers are represented.”

SMTC will launch by offering a range of IBM software packages including:

• BlueWorks Live is designed to make organisational processes more efficient by automating processes which are currently done manually. Teams can collaborate by logging onto a central system to see exactly what tasks have been completed, what tasks are currently being worked on and what tasks still need attention.
• Predictive analytical software is designed to help analyse and spot trends in data that organisations already own on young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) at impact level 3 (IL3) security. Having a better analysis of young people can potentially enable organisations to identify education, training and employment opportunities helping to reduce unemployment in communities.
• Data management software is designed to enable organisations to get a single view of the citizen by connecting disparate pieces information across departments, programmes and agencies. Having a complete picture of the relationship can potentially improve service to the citizen while cutting fraud and waste.
• SCC and IBM will also work to adapt a range of off-the-shelf solutions for cloud delivery to the public sector.
  

 

Evernote: Productividad maxima en Tablet

I am still using Evernote as my primary task manager and I am not looking back! That is not to say I have not had some problems over the past two weeks, but I can say that Evernote has improved how I manage my time.

What have I learned from Daniel’s eBook that I did not know already? Well, a lot actually. I knew very little of the power of Evernote to integrate information in a simple and logical way. In fact, I always tried to setup Evernote like a paper filing system would be setup, just more complicated. I used to have notebooks for many, many topics as well as many tags to give piece of mind in finding stuff. The reality is this duplication is overkill and unnecessary given the power of Evernote searching whether from your iPhone, iPad or computer. To that end, here is a simple list of stuff I picked up by reading Daniel’s Evernote eBook. Yes, many of these things could be found by hanging around the Evernote Knowledge base, but what Daniel does is provide real context around the functionality below; specifically context wrapped around the Getting Things Done System.

Things I learned from Daniel

1. Note links, how to prepare for a meeting by linking to different notes; love this feature. Check here for details on the Evernote Blog.
2. New spin on using EN with Outlook to process email (and Gmail for that matter)
3. Sharing notes and notebooks; already knew that this was possible, but never really tried it
4. Discovered the Evernote Knowledge Base
5. The case for hiding un-used tags for a specific notebook, must try this
6. Linking notes to calendar entries; saves time
7. Consolidating task lists using one note and check boxes
8. Master Project Note, Master Contact Note and Master Meeting Note; all templates included withDaniel’s book

So, what’s my current status now that I am two weeks into using Evernote and finally finished with Daniel’s book?

1. Starting to like the idea of the Master Next Action and Master Project Note
2. Leaning towards using one note for TODAY and NEXT with Master Project Notes for each project; keep track of overall tasks by project in the project note and then copy to TODAY/NEXT daily as needed according to context
3. Heavy usage of note linking, as copy a task to TODAY, link back to the Master Tracking note; check-off each check-box
4. Checkboxes may not be totally necessary, but they are a quick way of showing completion since adding/removing tags got kind of clunky
5. Overall the process of reorganizing my productivity with Evernote has allowed me to dig deep into each of my projects thereby creating a focus that I did not have. Daniel’s elegantly simply templates are an excellent way of doing this. Yes, they are based on GTD, but that is what makes them elegant

There you have it. For me, Evernote is working. I can now easily move between all of my projects and tasks very quickly on any of my devices and I now have the flexibility to change my setup and process however I need to. You can’t do this with any of the out of the box apps.

The main issues I have found in the experiment have been around crashes on my iOS devices as well as an annoying lack of indent feature on the MAC version of Evernote. None of these issues have been show stoppers, just small annoyances along the way.

That’s it for now. Next up, tweaking here and there and maybe a review of QuickOffice Pro HD. I may even dig into thesecretweapon…another interesting way to use Evernote to manage your day.

Pregunta.- A una cierta edad muchos artistas desaceleran, pero usted ha apostado ahora por la intensidad...
Respuesta.- Es que no me he retirado. No me siento tan mayor. Hago lo que sé hacer, trabajar con entusiasmo.
P.- Aquí aparece más desnudo y más complejo.
R.- Soy consciente de que muchos piensan que ya no se puede avanzar más en la pintura de paisaje, y ése fue uno de los motivos para que me lanzase a esta aventura. Por supuesto que se puede aún decir mucho con un paisaje. Es una forma de ver, de observar... La exposición fue creciendo poco a poco, porque cuando la Royal Academy de Londres me pidió que hiciese esta muestra muchas de la obras no existían. Yo no quería hacer una retrospectiva, pero también sentí cierto vértigo al ver la cantidad de espacio expositivo que tenía disponible... Era un reto. Y una responsabilidad, pues a no muchos artistas de mi edad se le sofrece una oportunidad así.
P.- Con esta apuesta da un paso atrás, a la tradición, y otro hacia adelante con el uso de la tecnología para desarrollar algunas de estas obras.
R.- Hay un intento de romper fronteras temporales y tratar algo tan clásico como el paisaje rompiendo las fronteras temporales, el canon. Además, la tecnología, desde el siglo XV, siempre ha incidido en la creación de imágenes. Ahora estoy planeando desarrollar una historia de la pintura desde el uso de las herramientas tecnológicas de cada momento. Desde las primeras lentes a la fotografía o la televisión. A mí me gusta pensar que también dibujo con las cámaras que utilizo.
P.- ¿En lo clásico se siente más radical?
R.- Creo que estoy invitando a entrar en un nuevo territorio. Y eso puede ser un gesto radical, porqué no. Quizá es por eso por lo que estoy tan excitado.
P.- Esta muestra es una apuesta por la pintura-pintura, por la sensorialidad del color.
R.- Así es. Digamos que es una forma de negarme a esa idea de la muerte de la pintura, que además es un concepto puramente europeo. En China o Japón, por ejemplo, no existe tal concepto. Ellos nos enseñan que el arte necesita tres elementos para cumplirse: la vista, la mano y el corazón... Vivimos en un tiempo de confusión absoluta. Y eso tiene que ver con el poder de la televisión. A través de ella hemos creído ver la realidad, pero a través sólo de unas pocas imágenes consideradas como la totalidad de lo real.
P.- Una forma de control.
R.- Sin duda. Y en parte debido a la cámara única, que reduce mucho la perspectiva. Es decir: nuestra capaz de visión. Y eso sucede también con la fotografía, pero nadie se lo cuestiona ya.
P.- ¿Cómo ve el mundo ahora?
R.- Nací en el 37 y he vivido con intensidad la segunda mitad del siglo XX, así que he visto momentos duros de nuestro mundo. En todos los sentidos. Ahora vivimos un momento fascinante gracias a las nuevas herramientas digitales. Desde al arte al periodismo. En este último caso la profesión está cambiando la forma que tenemos los humanos de informarnos, de comunicarnos las noticias. Los periódicos acabarán desapareciendo y se convertirán en plataformas digitales... El poder de la información se irá deslocalizando. Y eso hará gravitar los centros de poder mediático. A los gobiernos les resultará muy difícil controlar la información y eso propiciará otras estrategias políticas. No todas buenas, claro. Mire la Primavera Árabe. Todo está cambiando y aún no nos hemos acoplado a la velocidad del cambio. Quizá estemos entrando en un momento de caos, pero saldremos.
P.- ¿El arte puede ser una herramienta de protesta?
R.- Sí. Creo en el poder del arte para convulsionar. Y con las posibilidades de internet, los iPhone y los iPad, todo será distinto. Imagino a Picasso o a Van Gogh ahora fascinados con las nuevas herramientas.

Citrix CEO Mark Templeton said ShareFile was not so much 'Dropbox for enterprise' as 'iCloud for business.' A technical preview of ShareFile with StorageZones was available immediately, he added.

Combining ShareFile with Citrix Receiver (used to run hosted apps on different devices) means organisations can provide secure access to all the applications and all the data across a wide range of devices

Además de firmar aplicaciones para la popular plataforma móvil, este servicio basado en la nube permite que los desarrolladores administren en forma segura sus claves de certificados y almacenen sus aplicaciones firmadas, todo desde una única consola intuitiva basada en la nube. La solución Symantec Code Signing for Android también cuenta con la primera certificación especial Android Root de la historia de un proveedor de seguridad.

Esperando IOS 6

Poco a poco se empiezan a conocer detalles de iOS 6, la nueva versión del sistema operativo móvil que se espera que Apple presente en su conferencia para desarrolladores. Por lo pronto se ha podido saber que, casi con total seguridad, la compañía sustituirá la aplicación de mapas que utiliza, basada en Google Maps, por una propia.

Para lograrlo, la compañía adquirió tres empresas dedicadas a crear mapas: C3 Technologies (en 2011), Poly9 (2010) y PlaceBase (2009). Gracias a su tecnología ha podido desarrollar su propia base de datos de mapas.

Esta nueva aplicación tendrá un modo en tres dimensiones que mostrará imágenes reales del mapa, según han podido saber en 9to5mac. Este modo no se activará por defecto, por únicamente habrá que pulsar un botón para hacerlo.

OpenStreetMap

Cuando Apple presentó su nuevo iPad, a principios de marzo, también mostró una nueva aplicación de fotografía, iPhoto, que por primera vez utilizaba los mapas de OpenStreetMap.

Esta alternativa de tecnología abierta, se conoce generalmente como ‘la Wikipedia de los mapas’ y ya ha sido incorporada por otros servicios como Bing Maps (aunque únicamente como capa) o Foursquare.

En cualquier caso, por el momento habrá que esperar a la conferencia de desarrolladores de la compañía, que se celebrará a mediados de junio, para conocer más novedades sobre el sistema operativo de Apple.

El Parlamento Europeo rebaja los precios de los servicios móviles

El Parlamento Europeo aprobará mañana la bajada de los precios de las llamadas móviles y de los servicios de Internet en itinerancia (roaming) a partir del 1 julio. La nueva normativa que aprobará el Parlamento Europeo, acordada con los gobiernos de los estados miembros,extenderá los límites de precio para las llamadas móviles transfronterizas dentro de la UE, en vigor desde 2007, a los servicios de transferencia de datos, como el correo electrónico o la navegación por Internet. Además, reducirá todavía más los costes de las llamadas. A propuesta de los eurodiputados, los costes del uso de Internet se limitarán a un máximo de 70 céntimos por megabyte a partir del 1 de julio de 2012, y se reducirán paulatinamente hasta los 45 céntimos en 2013, y los 20 céntimos el 1 de julio de 2014. En la actualidad no existe ningún límite a los precios que los operadores imponen por el uso de Internet móvil en otros países de la UE. El nuevo límite a los precios de las llamadas móviles será de 29 céntimos por minuto a partir del 1 de julio de este año y de 19 céntimos desde julio de 2014. Actualmente el máximo es de 35 céntimos. Los mensajes de texto también serán más baratos, puesto que bajarán de los actuales 11 céntimos hasta los 9 céntimos el próximo 1 de julio y, posteriormente, a 6 céntimos en julio de 2014. Además, los consumidores tendrán la opción, desde el 1 de julio de 2014, de comprar los servicios de telefonía doméstica y de itinerancia por separado, con operadores diferentes si lo desean, y a la vez mantener el mismo número de teléfono. The E-Government Satisfaction Index scores 75.2 on ACSI’s 100-point scale. More than 300,000 survey responses were collected during the first quarter of 2012 to produce the Index. Satisfaction, though high, has hit a plateau and hasn’t varied more than 0.3 from the current score over the last seven consecutive quarters. Satisfaction with government websites drives government efficiency by increasing the likelihood that citizens will turn to the website before other more costly channels. High satisfaction also increases the likelihood of positive word of mouth recommendations. As smartphones and other mobile devices continue to proliferate, government agencies will have another efficient channel with which to serve their constituents.

UK parliament to provide 650 iPads to MPs, costing $420,000

As Britain’s economy enters a ‘double-dip’ recession (much to the dismay of its citizens), the Palace of Westminster has agreed to provide 650 members of parliament with iPads, replacing their old laptops at a cost of at least £260,000 (around $420,000) to the taxpayer.

iPads will only be provided to MPs that agree to trade-in their old laptops or computers, which could then be distributed to other staff in the House.

The Register reports that the supervisory body that oversees administration in the House agreed to the plan yesterday, green-lighting a “rapid rollout” of iPads, allowing MPs expense their new Apple tablet purchases.

Apple’s iPad has been allowed in the House of Commons for over a year, helping politicians work on the move and reduce the amount of waste from printing. In March 2011, Labour MP Kerry McCarthy made the first speech from an iPad in the Commons, following the announcement of a tablet trial earlier in the year:
It is not known if MPs will be provided with 3G-enabled iPads in the UK and whether app downloads and associated costs will be charged to the House, and in-turn funded by the taxpayer.

The Commons Commission has however said that if a hundred policitians returned their old computer equipment, then it would be able to save £50,000 in costs.

Analyst: iPad Could Be Key To Rebuilding Trust In Financial Industries

Can the iPad help finance, wealth management, and corporate banking companies rebuild a sense of trust with their customers after the global financial crisis? According to the analysts at Ovum, the answer is yes.

Analysts at the research firm released a note this week noting that the iPad (and tablets in general) is a perfect tool for the industries, which are often dominated by in-person “face-time” meetings.

Ovum notes that tablets offering a slick professional look, as well as tactile qualities, will help facilitate a more interactive experience.

The ability to hand an iPad or other tablet to customers, immediately update data in real time, and the added level of customer engagement compared to a laptop are all advantages in other industries and could be key factors in helping to rebuild financial relationships by giving them a more personal feel.

Rik Turner, senior analyst at Ovum and author of the report, described a sense of trust and personal contact as major tablet advantages.

The financial sector as a whole has come out of the global crisis with an urgent need to rebuild its credibility with a disillusioned public. In certain sub-verticals such as wealth management more “face-time” with the customer can help this rebuilding process.

One interesting argument from Ovum’s press release is that a tablet in itself may be a competitive advantage, particularly in meetings where a client works with multiple wealth management or corporate banking companies.

Furthermore, as most divide their assets up to be managed by different wealth management providers, a well-executed meeting carried out with the aid of a tablet may attract further business away from a competitor.

I’d posit that the iPad would most likely be a competitive advantage over any other tablet in such meetings because of the brand awareness of the iPad in both consumer and professional markets.
